Smoky Quartz Guide: Colors, Formation and Collecting
Smoky quartz is a brown to black variety of quartz (SiO2) that gets its distinctive color from natural irradiation of aluminum-bearing silicon dioxide. It is one of the most common gem-quality minerals on Earth, found on every continent, and has been prized since ancient times.
How Smoky Quartz Gets Its Color
The smoky color in quartz results from free silicon atoms created by natural gamma radiation acting on aluminum impurities within the crystal structure. When trace amounts of aluminum substitute for silicon in the quartz lattice, exposure to radiation from nearby radioactive minerals frees electrons that create color centers. The intensity of the color depends on the aluminum content and the radiation dose received over geological time.
Smoky Quartz Varieties
Smoky quartz spans a range from light tan to completely opaque black. Cairngorm is the traditional Scottish name for yellowish-brown smoky quartz from the Cairngorm Mountains. Morion refers to very dark, nearly opaque black smoky quartz, highly sought after by collectors. Smoky citrine combines the brown tones of smoky quartz with the yellow of citrine in a single crystal. Elestial smoky quartz shows layered, skeletal growth patterns with etched faces.
Where Smoky Quartz is Found
Brazil produces enormous quantities of smoky quartz from Minas Gerais. The Swiss Alps yield exceptional clarity specimens found in crystal pockets. Colorado produces fine smoky quartz from the Pikes Peak batholith, often alongside amazonite. Madagascar provides gem-quality crystals with excellent terminations. Pakistan and Afghanistan produce superb alpine-type smoky quartz with exceptional clarity.
