Un ventaglio di lame di barite rosa cipria si solleva da una matrice scura e scintillante, ogni piastra tabulare adagiata contro la successiva come carte spinte di lato fuori dal mazzo. Il rosa è tenue e uniforme, e si scalda fino al crema sulle punte delle lame e lungo i bordi sottili dove la luce le attraversa. Un secondo ventaglio, più piccolo, si apre a destra con inclinazione minore, mezzo sepolto nel fondo granuloso.
Bou Nahas, nel distretto di Oumjrane, è nota per la barite proprio in questo abito lamellare su roccia ricca di solfuri, ed è il fondo scuro a rendere visibili i cristalli chiari da un capo all'altro della stanza. La barite (BaSO4) è tenera, da 3 a 3,5 Mohs, eppure sorprendentemente pesante per il suo volume, con un peso specifico vicino a 4,5: la proprietà che le valse tra i vecchi minatori il nome di spato pesante. Le lame sottili si scheggiano sul bordo, quindi sollevi l'esemplare afferrandolo per la matrice.
L'esemplare misura 4,8 × 5,1 × 3,6 cm e pesa 91 g, tenuto tra pollice e indice nella fotografia per dare la scala. Non è previsto alcun supporto; questi scatti ritraggono questo unico ventaglio e nient'altro.
