Rosso mattone al nucleo, fino al cioccolato dove il pulviscolo interno è più fitto, il cristallo dominante si assottiglia in un rosa pallido traslucido lungo ogni spigolo smussato. L’ampia faccia superiore è vetrosa e appena scalinata, e un nodo di cristalli più piccoli si affolla alla base, là dove l’esemplare si è staccato dalla sua tasca. Il rosso sta dentro la calcite e non sopra: ossido di ferro catturato mentre il cristallo cresceva.
Una calcite in crescita ingloba tutto ciò che è sospeso nel fluido attorno a sé, per cui un cristallo può risultare opaco nel corpo e limpido lungo gli spigoli formati per ultimi: esattamente lo schema in mostra qui, con il pulviscolo che si dirada verso ogni smusso. Con durezza 3 Mohs e sfaldatura romboedrica perfetta in tre direzioni, è tenera al punto da farsi graffiare da quasi ogni vicino sullo stesso ripiano: le lasci spazio.
5,6 × 4,6 × 2,5 cm, 105 g, ripreso in mano e non montato. In fotografia c’è questo cristallo, non un suo sosia uscito dalla stessa tasca.
