Un dioptasio verde smeraldo intenso, in prismi corti e tozzi con terminazioni romboedriche nette, affolla i due terzi superiori di questa placca congolese e si assottiglia in una fine drusa scintillante là dove incontra la limonite ocra nuda. Durezza 5 Mohs e sfaldatura perfetta: la sollevi afferrandola dalla limonite. 10,7 × 7,6 × 3,3 cm, 275 g, appoggia in piano senza supporto.

Verde bottiglia nell’ombra, smeraldo acceso nell’istante in cui la luce trova una via all’interno: è questo scarto a separare il dioptasio da ogni altro minerale verde, e questa placca congolese lo porta lungo una crosta ininterrotta. Prismi corti e tozzi con terminazioni romboedriche nette affollano i due terzi superiori e si assottigliano in una fine drusa scintillante dove incontrano la roccia ospite. In basso e a destra la limonite ocra affiora in chiazze nude e cavernose che rendono il verde ancora più deciso.
Il dioptasio è un ciclosilicato di rame, CuSiO3·H2O, e il suo colore è dovuto al rame stesso e non a un’impurezza in traccia: ecco perché il tono si mantiene identico per tutto lo spessore di ogni cristallo. Con durezza 5 Mohs e sfaldatura romboedrica perfetta si scheggia più facilmente di quanto i collezionisti si aspettino, quindi lo sollevi afferrandolo dalla limonite e lo tenga lontano da pulitori a ultrasuoni e fonti di calore diretto.
La placca misura 10,7 × 7,6 × 3,3 cm per 275 g, sta comodamente in una mano e appoggia in piano sul dorso di limonite senza bisogno di supporto. Ogni immagine di questa scheda riguarda questo pezzo e nessun altro.
