Lame fulve esplodono da un nucleo rugginoso in tutte le direzioni, alcune abbastanza traslucide da portare la luce per tutta la loro lunghezza e quasi tutte incrostate di piccoli cristalli bianchi, come brina posata su una felce. Letto nell’insieme è una sfera irregolare di aculei di circa 3,8 cm di diametro, densa e scura nel mezzo, aperta e chiara alle punte.
Il gesso, CaSO4·2H2O, è un minerale di durezza 2 Mohs — l’unghia lo incide — e rosette come questa si formano quando le lame nucleano attorno a un punto comune in una cavità aperta e si irradiano verso l’esterno fin dove lo spazio lo consente. Il minerale è leggermente solubile in acqua, quindi l’umidità è l’unica cosa da tenere davvero alla larga; un pennello asciutto usato con leggerezza è tutta la pulizia necessaria, e una vetrinetta chiusa gli conviene più di uno scaffale aperto.
La rosetta misura 3,8 × 3,6 × 3,3 cm e pesa 30 g, fissata con pasta adesiva sul blocchetto di acrilico trasparente delle immagini. Quelle fotografie ritraggono proprio questa rosetta, che viene spedita sul blocchetto raffigurato.
