Punte di quarzo limpido si aprono a raggiera in ogni direzione da questo gruppo di Yaogangxian, le due più lunghe sporgenti con forte inclinazione e assottigliate in terminazioni acute e integre. Annidati fra le loro basi stanno cristalli di cassiterite di un nero duro e oleoso che inghiotte la luce là dove il quarzo la restituisce, e in basso a destra una fluorite viola pallido si affaccia sotto il fronte dei cristalli. Alcune punte metalliche color ottone si trovano in basso sulla placca.
Quel terzetto – quarzo, cassiterite, fluorite – è l'impronta digitale di una vena greisen stannifera, e Yaogangxian, a Chenzhou nello Hunan, ne è l'indirizzo cinese classico. La cassiterite è SnO2, il principale minerale di stagno, sorprendentemente pesante in mano e dura fra 6 e 7 della scala Mohs. Qui il quarzo la ripara; la fluorite, con durezza Mohs 4, è la cosa più tenera del pezzo e quella da sorvegliare quando lo maneggia.
La placca si estende per 7,4 × 3,8 × 4,6 cm e pesa 150 g; viene fornita sciolta, senza montatura. Consideri queste fotografie il ritratto del pezzo reale, non un campione della tipologia.
