Una placca sottile, appena 1,3 cm di spessore, lastricata da un bordo all'altro di cristalli di fluorite che virano dal verde oliva al grigio fumo fino al violetto sui vertici. Nessuna faccia è liscia: ogni cristallo è costruito a terrazze, con i contorni di fantasmi più antichi che affiorano dentro la crescita più recente. Micro-cristalli bianchi screziano gli spazi e un cristallo nero lucente rompe la superficie verso l'alto.
Un fantasma è un'istantanea in senso letterale – una superficie di crescita che si è arrestata, ha raccolto una pellicola di impurità ed è poi stata sepolta sotto fluorite nuova – perciò il fantasma dentro ogni cristallo è il profilo che il cristallo stesso aveva in una fase precedente della propria vita. La fluorite della Mongolia Interna viene collezionata proprio per questa stratificazione di verde e viola. La fluorite è CaF2, durezza 4 Mohs, con sfaldatura ottaedrica perfetta; un colpo su un vertice ne solleva una scaglia triangolare, quindi la riponga dove nulla possa rotolarle addosso.
La placca è di 7,6 × 1,3 × 6,6 cm per 120 g – leggera rispetto alla superficie che occupa, e resa al meglio in piedi, così che la luce sfiori le terrazze di taglio. Fotografata esattamente come arriverà.
