Se guarda dentro la faccia anteriore, il cristallo si apre in una scalinata: strati grigio-viola impilati in gradini che si allontanano, un fantasma dietro l'altro, ciascuno una superficie di crescita che è stata impolverata e poi sepolta da quella successiva. La pelle esterna resta di un pallido azzurro ghiaccio, che sbianca quasi fino alla brina lungo il cubo di sinistra. Lame di calcite color crema si ergono in ventagli sovrapposti lungo il bordo superiore e quello destro, e qualche puntino metallico scuro si annida nelle suture.
Un fantasma si forma quando la crescita si arresta, una pellicola di materia estranea si deposita sulla faccia del cristallo e la fluorite riprende a crescere al di sopra; il contorno sepolto sopravvive come spettro del cristallo precedente. Qui il processo si è ripetuto molte volte, ed è per questo che l'interno si legge come terrazzato anziché come un unico cubo interno. La fluorite è CaF2, durezza 4 Mohs, con sfaldatura ottaedrica perfetta, e può rispondere alla luce ultravioletta, anche se l'intensità di quella risposta varia da cristallo a cristallo.
