Il cubo centrale è il motivo per cui vale la pena guardare. È azzurro ghiaccio pallido, occupa quasi tutto il fronte e sulla sua faccia corre una scala di terrazze di crescita: gradini quadrati che rientrano ad angoli retti netti. Un cubo lilla rosato si appoggia da sinistra in alto, altri lavanda più grigi si affollano da destra e dal basso, e sottili croste di quarzo bianco riempiono le giunzioni.
Nulla qui è stato tagliato o sagomato: la geometria è semplicemente ciò che la fluorite fa. Facce a gradini come queste si formano quando un cristallo cresce abbastanza in fretta perché nuovi strati si nucleino lungo gli spigoli prima che lo strato precedente si sia riempito, lasciando le terrazze congelate sul posto. Le differenze di colore fra i cubi nascono da piccole variazioni di elementi in traccia e difetti reticolari mentre la cavità si raffreddava: una sola chimica, CaF2, con più volti. Durezza 4 Mohs e sfaldatura perfetta, quindi lo tenga lontano da qualsiasi cosa possa colpire uno spigolo.
7,1 × 3,0 × 4,3 cm e 90 g, mostrato in mano senza base. Niente qui fa da controfigura: i cubi delle fotografie sono i cubi che arrivano.
