Un unico cristallo rosso mogano giace di traverso su questa placca di Daye come uno scafo incagliato — facce opacizzate dall'ossido di ferro, spigoli tirati dritti come lame, e una lunga cresta a chiglia che raccoglie un filo d'oro ovunque la luce vi scorra sopra. Sotto e attorno a esso un letto di calcite ambra chiara, pesca sulle punte e quasi incolore nelle gole, ne sostiene il peso.
Daye è terra di ferro e di rame, ed è da lì che viene il colore: l'ossido di ferro fine assorbito durante la crescita tinge il grande cristallo di sangue di bue, mentre la generazione successiva e più pulita che gli sta sotto è rimasta di un miele pallido. Un grande cristallo opaco su una drusa luminosa è una composizione che si legge da un capo all'altro di una stanza. La calcite (CaCO3) è solo 3 Mohs, si sfalda perfettamente in tre direzioni e si corrode al contatto con qualsiasi cosa acida — compresi i polpastrelli lasciati sopra troppo a lungo.
Con 12,7 × 12,4 × 5,6 cm e 525 g questo è un vero pezzo da vetrina, non un campioncino. Viaggia senza montatura, e queste immagini sono state scattate a questa placca soltanto.
