Due generazioni di calcite si incontrano lungo una cresta di roccia bruna butterata. Da un lato un campo rosa pesca di scalenoedri appuntiti sta serrato come i denti di un pettine, con un solo cristallo più grande – color miele limpido, brillante come acqua – che si leva un paio di centimetri sopra la folla. Dall’altro una drusa bianca e zuccherina di cristalli molto più piccoli imbrina la matrice, e fra le due la roccia ospite mostra cavità aperte e macchioline verde-nere.
La calcite, CaCO3, è trigonale, ha durezza 3 Mohs e si sfalda in romboedri secondo tre direzioni: è dunque un pezzo da vetrina più che da maneggiare. La tenga lontana da aceto, acidi e detergenti domestici, che in pochi secondi opacizzano una faccia cristallina. Viene qui proposta come reattiva agli UV; la calcite è fra i minerali più affidabili sotto la lampada, anche se la brillantezza varia da tasca a tasca.
7,6 × 5,6 × 5,8 cm, 185 g, senza supporto. Le dita nell’inquadratura danno la scala, e il pezzo che tengono è quello che verrà incartato.
