Una morbida nube olivastra di materiale incluso resta sigillata dentro il cristallo di calcite dominante, come un temporale intrappolato in un fermacarte; il cristallo, tozzo e squadrato, è limpido come vetro lungo gli spigoli e appena paglierino nel corpo. Un secondo cristallo, più piccolo, cresce inclinato dietro al primo, con le facce del prisma finemente striate. Entrambi poggiano su una drusa crema di piccoli cristalli brillanti che si distende sulla matrice.
Vale la pena chiamare l’abito con il suo nome. La calcite è trigonale, e ciò che a prima vista sembra un cubo è in realtà un romboedro acuto, con le facce che si incontrano ad angoli appena diversi dai novanta gradi: proprio quello scarto minimo è l’indizio per chi sta imparando a distinguere a occhio la calcite dalla fluorite. Con durezza 3 Mohs e tre sfaldature perfette, la calcite si scheggia facilmente se la si lascia sbattere contro i pezzi vicini, quindi le riservi una scatola foderata o un ripiano imbottito.
La provenienza è Daye, a Huangshi, Hubei. L’esemplare misura 5,1 × 4,3 × 3,6 cm, pesa 65 g e arriva esattamente come lo vede, senza base. Le fotografie di questa scheda sono state scattate proprio a questo gruppo di cristalli.
