Dischi viola semi-immersi in una placca bianco gesso, ognuno cerchiato come un’agata segata: un bordo violetto scuro, all’interno una fascia lilla più chiara, poi un nucleo smerigliato quasi incolore. Visti di fronte sembrano premuti dentro la roccia più che cresciuti su di essa: è il materiale a bande dello Zhejiang che il mercato chiama fluorite lecca-lecca.
Bande così nitide registrano un fluido che cambiava composizione fra un impulso di crescita e l’altro, e ogni anello è un capitolo della chimica della cavità. Poiché i cristalli sono incastonati anziché sporgenti, la roccia bianca ne ha protetto le facce esterne dai danni da contatto che di solito accompagnano l’estrazione. La fluorite (CaF2) ha durezza 4 Mohs e sfaldatura ottaedrica, abbastanza tenera perché la matrice si guadagni davvero il ruolo di corazza.
