Una sola punta di quarzo color ambra affumicata si leva netta sopra le altre, con facce vetrose e leggermente a gradini, mentre cristalli fumé più piccoli scintillano nel letto sottostante. Attorno a loro stanno cristalli di dolomite bianco crema dall'abito squadrato, e in quel fondo pallido sono caduti granati arrotondati color marmellata d'arance: due abbastanza grandi da guidare lo sguardo, con una spruzzata di grani mandarino nel resto della matrice. Il rovescio è una roccia di un rosa-grigio polveroso che fa risaltare i toni caldi soprastanti.
Il quarzo fumé non deve il colore ad alcuna aggiunta. La radioattività naturale che agisce sull'alluminio in traccia nel reticolo di SiO2 scurisce un quarzo altrimenti limpido fino ai toni del tè e dell'ambra. Questa convivenza conta al momento di prendersene cura, perché le specie qui presenti non sono ugualmente resistenti: il quarzo sta a 7 Mohs e il granato lo segue da vicino, ma la dolomite è solo 3,5–4 e reagisce agli acidi; tenga i detergenti domestici ben lontani e sollevi la polvere con un pennello asciutto.
Il pezzo misura 4,3 × 3,8 × 3,0 cm e pesa 60 g. Arriva senza montatura, mostrato in mano per dare la scala; le immagini sono di questo esemplare e di nessun altro.
