Due cupole di calcopirite color ottone cavalcano una crosta di quarzo bianco, ciascuna costruita da decine di cristalli intrecciati e serrati in una testa arrotondata; attorno a esse, cristalli più piccoli sono disseminati sulla placca in una costellazione sparsa. Il quarzo sottostante è zuccherino e brillante, e si raffredda verso un bianco-azzurro pallido dove la drusa si fa più minuta. Il metallo si legge oro caldo in luce diretta e bronzo oliva in ombra.
I giacimenti di rame del Jiangxi danno calcopirite in questo abito aggregato e arrotondato, con molti individui che nucleano insieme invece di un singolo cristallo pulito che occupa la scena. Il minerale è tenero per essere un solfuro, 3,5–4 Mohs, e si patina lentamente verso i blu e i viola; il cambiamento è naturale, e una conservazione asciutta, tenendo le dita nude lontane dal metallo, è ciò che mantiene l'oro brillante più a lungo.
