Due cristalli di calcite oro paglierino poggiano su una lunga lastra di matrice ocra, ciascuno appiattito in quella forma a cuneo che i collezionisti riconoscono come geminato a farfalla. Quello inferiore e più grande è limpido come vetro attorno al bordo e offuscato al centro da macchie ferruginose color ruggine; il cristallo superiore è più piccolo, più pulito e inclinato in senso opposto, così che la coppia si bilancia sulla placca.
Una geminazione di questo tipo avviene quando due individui di calcite condividono un piano reticolare e crescono come immagini speculari, ed è ciò che produce il profilo appiattito, quasi alare. I corpi minerari carbonatici dello Hunan sono più noti per i loro solfuri, e una placca di matrice che esce dal sottosuolo con la calcite intatta merita di essere tenuta da conto: con durezza 3 Mohs, un urto nella direzione sbagliata spacca un cristallo in due di netto.
La placca corre per 15,7 × 7,1 × 3,3 cm e pesa 240 g, con il retro abbastanza piatto da poterla appoggiare in verticale su una mensola. Nessun supporto è incluso; le fotografie documentano proprio questa placca e nessun’altra.
