Lame di cianite si impilano per tutta l'altezza di questo blocco brasiliano, serrate bordo a bordo come le pagine di un libro gonfio. Alcune hanno quel blu fiordaliso uniforme che i collezionisti cercano; altre impallidiscono verso il peltro e il grigio argento dove quarzo e mica fine si sono insinuati, e qualcuna cattura la luce con la lucentezza perlacea che la cianite mostra lungo la sfaldatura. Il retro è grezzo e non lavorato, e la faccia a lame è chiaramente quella da esporre.
La cianite è Al2SiO5, si forma ad alta pressione nelle rocce metamorfiche ed è nota per una durezza che dipende dalla direzione: circa da 4,5 a 5 nel senso della lunghezza della lama e da 6,5 a 7 di traverso. Una punta d'acciaio la graffia in un verso e scivola via nell'altro. Quel comportamento le è valso l'antico nome di distene, due forze, e vale la pena ricordarlo prima che qualcuno provi a pulire una lama con un attrezzo duro.
