Lastre piatte di calcite giacciono impilate e sfalsate come tegole d'ardesia che scivolano da un tetto, ognuna un romboedro verde oliva pallido che si fa traslucido lungo i bordi. Sulle superfici superiori corre una crosta di microcristalli rosso mattone, densa in alcuni punti e ridotta altrove a una spolverata di ruggine, con chiazze ocra e ossido di ferro quasi nero a riempire gli incavi tra una lastra e l'altra. Nulla qui è stato tagliato o sagomato: la torre a gradini è semplicemente il modo in cui i cristalli sono cresciuti.
La calcite impilata di questo tipo si forma quando ogni lastra successiva nuclea leggermente fuori centro rispetto a quella sottostante, così che ogni nuovo romboedro sporge oltre il precedente. Il rivestimento rosso è arrivato dopo, quando soluzioni ricche di ferro hanno attraversato la cavità e sono precipitate sulle facce esposte: ecco perché i lati inferiori, riparati, restano verdi e puliti. La calcite è 3 Mohs e la crosta delicata si asporta con un polpastrello: solo spazzola morbida e asciutta, mai acqua.
