Poederblauw, en niet een kleur die vaak in een mineralenvitrine opduikt: een ronde halve bol van fijne, rechtopstaande blauwe kristallen bedekt bijna de hele voorzijde van deze thumbnail uit Yunnan, met een fluweelzacht oppervlak dat licht ruig oogt waar de kristalpunten door de omtrek breken. Eronder en erachter is de matrix grijswit en botryoïdaal, met een naad zwart oxide die de linkerschouder overkorst en een vage blauwe waas die in het bleke gesteente doorloopt.
Sodaliet komt men gewoonlijk tegen als massief blauw gesteente, in platen gezaagd en tot kralen getrommeld, dus een stuk waarin het blauw zich aandient als een kristallijne rozet met een stralende, vezelige textuur is iets heel anders. Het krijtachtige oppervlak neemt vingervet gretig op en laat zich daarna niet makkelijk meer reinigen – pak het bij de grijze matrix vast en houd het uit de vochtigheid.
De thumbnail is 3,0 × 2,4 × 3,7 cm en 33 g, met kneedlijm bevestigd op de doorzichtige acrylkubus die op de foto's te zien is; die foto's zijn van dit individuele stuk gemaakt.
