Over dit exemplaar
Dit is fluoriet dat vergeten is dat het een kubus hoort te zijn. Het volledige vlak van vijftien centimeter is een reeks dikke, overlappende koepels, elk bedekt met een matte rijp in de kleur van houtrook, waar amber en oud goud van onderaf doorheen gloeien overal waar die korst dunner wordt. Pyriet ligt er in kleine scherpe puntjes overheen verspreid – zilvergoud op de linkerlobben, geoxideerd tot roestoranje langs de rechterkant.
Botryoïdaal fluoriet ontstaat wanneer CaF2 in snelle lagen neerslaat op een al gekromd oppervlak in plaats van vanuit één kiem naar buiten op te bouwen. Het resultaat is mammillair in plaats van kristallijn, in groeiwijze dichter bij een chalcedoon dan bij de scherpe kubussen waar de soort om bekendstaat. Omdat die textuur de hele reden van bestaan van dit stuk is, kunt u nat reinigen beter laten: fluoriet heeft slechts hardheid 4 en schrobben polijst een matte korst voorgoed glad.
Met 15,2 × 10,2 × 7,6 cm en 1486 g – net iets minder dan 1,5 kg – vult het een handpalm en vraagt het om plankruimte, niet om een lade. Er is geen voetstuk gemonteerd; de vlakke onderkant houdt het stabiel. Het stuk op de foto's is het stuk dat verzonden wordt.
