Over dit exemplaar
Op deze plaat uit Fujian is sneeuw neergedaald: honderden kleine witte calcietkristallen, schouder aan schouder samengepakt tot één gewelfde korst, suikerachtig waar het licht hun punten vangt, met een vage celadonzweem langs de rechterschouder. Daarachter en daaronder is het moedergesteente een donkere staalgrijze massa van glasachtige plaatvormige kristallen, dof waar het calciet helder is, en dat contrast draagt de hele compositie.
Dichte drusen als deze ontstaan wanneer een mineraalrijke oplossing op alle beschikbare punten tegelijk kiemt, zodat geen enkel kristal de ruimte krijgt om groot te worden. Calciet is zacht – Mohs 3 – en splijt langs drie rhomboëdrische vlakken, dus de korst mag nooit worden geschrobd of gestoten; een pufje lucht is het juiste reinigingsgereedschap. Het bruist bovendien in verdund zuur, reden genoeg om huishoudelijke schoonmaakmiddelen er ver vandaan te houden.
Het exemplaar meet 7,1 × 4,8 × 4,6 cm en weegt 116 g; een standaard is niet inbegrepen. De beelden hierboven leggen precies dit stuk vast.
