Bleek, vrijwel kleurloos calciet verdringt zich aan de voorzijde van deze plaat uit Daye, glasachtig en doorschijnend, met bij verscheidene kristallen een rokerig grijze kern en een waas van roestaanslag daar waar de groei een tijd vuil verliep. Ze zitten tegen een roetzwarte korst met roeststrepen, en de ontmoeting van die twee oppervlakken – nat ogend kristal tegen mat houtskool – is waar dit exemplaar het van moet hebben.
Calciet, CaCO3, staat op Mohs 3 en splijt in drie perfecte richtingen; een gevallen kristal schilfert niet maar valt uiteen in romboëders, dus dit is een stuk dat u bij zijn donkere basis optilt. De aanbieding vermeldt bariet in associatie; wat de camera hier onmiskenbaar vastlegt, is het calciet, met vlakken die helder genoeg zijn om lichtvlekken terug naar de lens te werpen. Azijn en huishoudzuren etsen carbonaat bij aanraking – houd beide ver weg.
Prettig handzaam met 6,0 × 5,0 × 4,0 cm bij 120 g, zonder montage, in de hand gefotografeerd zodat de doorschijnendheid tegen de donkere matrix afsteekt. Dit is het individuele exemplaar dat wordt aangeboden, geen representatieve steekproef.
