Over dit exemplaar
Deze plaat uit Fujian leest als twee landschappen op één steen. De bovenste helft is een dicht plaveisel van kleine, waterheldere kubussen, vaag blauw waar ze zich opeenhopen, uitgespreid over donkergrijs moedergesteente. Onder de breuk strekt zich een beige druse met suikerkorreltextuur uit, en daar verschijnt hetzelfde fluoriet alleen als losse kubussen, ver uit elkaar en op zichzelf staand.
Kleurloos fluoriet wordt vaak overgeslagen ten gunste van paars en groen, wat bij een stuk als dit jammer is: zonder kleur om naar te kijken leest u geometrie – kubusribben, de manier waarop de kleine kristallen zich langs de breuk opstellen, het verschil in kristaldichtheid tussen beide oppervlakken. Fluoriet is CaF2, hardheid 4, en splijt glad volgens octaëdrische vlakken, dus de blootliggende kubushoeken langs de bovenrand zijn de kwetsbare punten.
De plaat meet 7,5 × 7,0 × 4,0 cm en weegt 185 g; ze wordt zonder montage in de hand getoond. Wat de camera hier laat zien, is wat onze werkbank verlaat.
