Over dit stuk uit Yunnan staat een palissade van romig strogele zuilen schouder aan schouder, elk omhuld door een suikerige microkristallijne korst die eerder als zachte glinstering leest dan als glazige flits. Karamelkleurige verkleuring loopt door de geulen ertussen omlaag en wordt naar de basis toe dieper, terwijl de hoogste spitsen langs de bovenrand de skyline doorbreken.
Natuurlijke zwavel is een vreemde eend in de vitrine: een element dat rechtstreeks uit vulkanische en sedimentaire milieus kristalliseert, orthorombisch, met harsglans en zacht met hardheid 1,5 tot 2,5 (Mohs). Het is bovendien gevoelig voor warmte – warme handen of een hete vitrinelamp kunnen het oppervlak doen craqueleren – dus houd het koel en pak het zo min mogelijk vast. De afgeronde, drusige huid legt hier trage aangroei vast in plaats van vrije groei in open ruimte.
Het staat 6,1 cm hoog, is 4,8 cm breed en 2,5 cm diep bij 79 g, klein genoeg voor een holle handpalm, en is los gefotografeerd zonder sokkel. Wat u op de afbeeldingen ziet, is het stuk dat ingepakt en verstuurd wordt.
