Shangbao Mine, Hunan, feather calcite with pyrite at 12 g; a miniature for the UV collector.
Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.
Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.
Hunan's tungsten-tin and lead-zinc mines have supplied the world with fluorite, calcite, quartz and sulfide specimens since the 1990s.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 3.7 × 3.3 × 2 cm (1.46 × 1.30 × 0.79 in) and 12 g (0.4 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
