Over dit exemplaar
Een strooisel wijnrode granaten over gebroken roomwit veldspaat: dat is de hele compositie, en ze werkt. Weinig granaten zijn groter dan een rijstkorrel, en toch is elk ervan een scherpe dodecaëder met glasachtige vlakken, waarbij de grootste in het hart bijna zwart wordt. Ertussen staan blokkige veldspaatkristallen en enkele rookkwartspunten, waarvan er één helder genoeg is om de matrix erdoorheen te zien.
Granaat is een groep en niet één mineraal: verschillende soorten delen dezelfde structuur en wisselen alleen de metalen daarbinnen uit, en juist daarom loopt de kleur van granaat van dit diepe wijnrood via oranje tot groen. Het gezelschap dat het hier houdt, is typerend voor een granitische holte: veldspaat, kwarts en een granaat die beide overleeft. Met 6,5 tot 7,5 op de schaal van Mohs is het het hardste op het stuk, en het specimen als geheel is stevig genoeg om vrij ter hand te nemen.
5,1 × 3,8 × 2,5 cm, 55 g, op kit geplaatst op het transparante presentatieblokje van acryl dat op de foto's te zien is. Gefotografeerd precies zoals het aankomt: dit exemplaar, op deze sokkel.
