Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica and feldspar at 10.2 cm and 252 g; a cabinet plate. A tall grey plate with small aquamarine crystals, silvery mica and white feldspar blocks across its face, the aquamarine glassy against the grey.
Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.
Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals. Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them.
The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.
