Over dit exemplaar
Eén gedrongen kwartskristal, aan beide uiteinden getermineerd, rust in een ondiepe kom van roomkleurige drusige matrix. De punten zijn waterhelder; binnenin vangt een zachte witte sluier het licht en maakt van het kristal een klein lampion. Over het voorvlak rimpelen flauwe groeitreden, en de kruimel gastgesteente eronder fonkelt van minuscule kwartspuntjes.
Daocheng, in het westen van Sichuan, levert kwarts precies in deze samengedrukte, dubbelgetermineerde habitus – vandaar dat handelaren naar het etiket herkimerstijl grijpen. Beide uiteinden kunnen alleen volledige eindvlakken vormen wanneer een kristal zwevend in een open of met klei gevulde holte groeit in plaats van vastgeworteld aan een wand, zodat de vorm zelf een verslag van de holte is. Kwarts (SiO2) heeft hardheid 7 volgens Mohs en hoeft niet ontzien te worden; de matrixkruimel is het kwetsbare deel.
Samen 3,8 × 3,3 × 3,0 cm, 31 g, geplaatst op het transparante acrylblokje dat op de foto's te zien is. Die foto's tonen dit kristal en geen ander.
