Dit kristal uit Daocheng is aan beide uiteinden getermineerd, zonder ergens een litteken van aanhechting, en van onderaf houdt een kleinere kwarts het vast. Het inwendige is allesbehalve leeg: zwarte koolstofvlokjes liggen verspreid door het lichaam, en waar die uitdunnen nemen zilverachtige sluiers het over – geheelde breuken die in dunne spiegels veranderen zodra het stuk draait.
Kwarts die vrij zwevend in een met klei beklede holte groeit, vormt rondom vlakken in plaats van in matrix te wortelen, en daarom wordt Chinees materiaal van deze stijl vergeleken met de originelen uit New York. De donkere insluitsels zijn koolstofhoudend materiaal dat tijdens de groei werd ingesloten; de sluiers zijn oude breuken die het kristal zelf heeft hersteld, en beide zijn het tegendeel van gebreken – ze zijn het verslag van hoe het gegroeid is. Mohs 7 maakt het tot een van de weinige soorten in een vitrine die u zonder zorg kunt hanteren.
