Over dit exemplaar
Eén azurietzon beslaat vrijwel de hele voorzijde van deze dunne plaat: een schijf ultramarijn, in het midden zo donker dat hij als inkt leest en oplichtend naar korenbloemblauw waar het licht erop valt. Het oppervlak is fluweel, geen glas – talloze microscopische blaadjes die rechtop staan, als de pool van een tapijt. Twee of drie bleke eilandjes moederklei breken door het blauw heen en geven de schijf een kustlijn.
Zulke zonnen ontstaan wanneer azuriet tussen de lagen van een zachte kleisteen kristalliseert: er is geen ruimte om omhoog te bouwen, dus spreiden de stralige blaadjes zich zijwaarts uit tot een vlakke plaat. Azuriet is een kopercarbonaat, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, met hardheid 3,5 tot 4 op de schaal van Mohs, en het bleke moedergesteente is nog zachter. Was een Malbunka-zon nooit en borstel het blauw nooit af; een luchtstootje is de hele schoonmaakroutine, en het stuk hoort uit direct zonlicht te blijven.
De plaat meet 2,8 × 2,8 cm bij 1,3 cm dik en weegt slechts 10 g; hij wordt met een dotje witte montagekit op het heldere acrylblok gehouden. Elke foto toont deze zon, gemonteerd zoals afgebeeld.
