Over dit exemplaar
Twee calcietgeneraties ontmoeten elkaar langs een richel van poreus bruin gesteente. Aan de ene kant staat een perzikroze veld van scherpe scalenoëders zo dicht opeen als de tanden van een kam, met één groter kristal – honinghelder, waterhelder – dat een paar centimeter boven de menigte uitkomt. Aan de andere kant berijpt een witte suikerige druse van veel kleinere kristallen de matrix, en daartussen vertoont het moedergesteente open holtes en donkere groenzwarte spikkels.
Calciet, CaCO3, is trigonaal, hardheid 3, en splijt in drie richtingen tot ruitjes; dit is dus een plankstuk en geen stuk om vast te pakken. Houd het weg van azijn, zuren en huishoudreinigers, die een kristalvlak binnen enkele seconden dof etsen. Het wordt hier als uv-reactief aangeboden; calciet hoort onder de lamp bij de betrouwbaardere mineralen, al verschilt de felheid van holte tot holte.
7,6 × 5,6 × 5,8 cm, 185 g, zonder standaard. De vingers in beeld geven de schaal aan, en het stuk daartussen is het stuk dat wordt ingepakt.
