Over dit exemplaar
Rijp op roest: haarfijne gipsnaalden steken in twee dichte pompons uit een donker chocoladebruine korst, met daartussen een lossere waaier. De naalden zijn kleurloos en glasachtig waar ze het licht vangen en krijgen een warme amberkleur waar ze plat op de matrix liggen; het hele oppervlak fonkelt bij de minste kanteling van de hand.
Gips (CaSO4·2H2O) hoort tot de zachtste mineralen die een verzamelaar ooit in huis krijgt, hardheid 2 en te tekenen met een vingernagel, en naaldvormige waaiers als deze zijn de kwetsbaarste verschijningsvorm ervan. Ze groeiden in open holten, met flinterdunne kristallen die vanuit een gemeenschappelijk punt uitstraalden tot ze op gesteente stuitten. Houd het stuk droog, want gips is licht oplosbaar, en verwijder stof met een luchtstootje of een heel zachte kwast in plaats van met een doek, die de naalden bij tientallen afbreekt.
Het exemplaar meet 6,6 × 2,5 × 3,8 cm en weegt 50 g. Het is in de hand en ongemonteerd gefotografeerd, precies zoals het zal aankomen.
