Romboëders gestapeld als dakpannen: dit duimnagelstuk uit Chenzhou bouwt zich in overlappende platen naar boven op, elke plaat iets verschoven ten opzichte van de vorige, tot de groep uitloopt in een klein getrapt torentje. De bovenste lagen dragen een koperrood velletje met een zwakke satijnglans; daaronder zet dezelfde habitus zich voort in roomwit en bleekroze, glasachtig overal waar het licht een vlak treft dat de verwering nooit heeft bereikt.
Zulke getrapte groei legt onderbrekingen vast. Elke pauze in de aanvoer laat een richel achter, en die richels stapelen zich op tot terrassen: hier is niets gezaagd of bijgewerkt, de vorm is volledig zoals hij gegroeid is. Calciet is CaCO3, slechts 3 op de schaal van Mohs, en splijt schoon in drie richtingen: een vingernagel krast het en een druppel azijn etst het, dus stof het af met een zacht kwastje en houd alles wat zuur is ver weg.
Een echt duimnagelstuk van 2,8 × 2,0 × 2,5 cm en 15 g, met kit bevestigd op het transparante acrylblokje waarop het is gefotografeerd en dat meereist. Elke afbeelding hier toont deze ene kristalgroep.
