Over dit exemplaar
Een half dozijn slanke kwartsprisma's waaiert uit een donker omkorste voet, melkwit langs de schacht en helder wordend tot glasachtige punten aan de top. De zijkanten zijn geribbeld met gestapelde groeirichels, elke laag iets scheef ten opzichte van de laag eronder – daaraan dankt deze habitus uit Binnen-Mongolië zijn bijnaam ‘schroefkwarts’. Olijfzwarte spikkels sproeten over de prisma's en verdikken tot een donkere korst waar ze de matrix raken.
Kwarts is siliciumdioxide, SiO2, hardheid 7 op de schaal van Mohs – hard genoeg dat zo dunne kristallen het hanteren veel beter doorstaan dan ze eruitzien. De draaiing is een illusie van stapeling: opeenvolgende groeilagen werden fractioneel gedraaid afgezet, zodat het prisma omhoog lijkt te spiralen zonder dat het rooster zelf ooit buigt. Waaiers die al hun punten intact houden, zijn de exemplaren om op te wachten.
Het cluster meet 5,1 × 3,6 × 3,6 cm en weegt 31 g. Het komt op de afgebeelde heldere acrylkubus, die de kristallen vrij van de plank tilt. De hier afgebeelde waaier is degene die uw kant op komt.
