Over dit exemplaar
Scharlaken confetti over houtskoolgrijs. Honderden vanadinietkristallen – zeshoekige tafeltjes en korte tonnetjes, de meeste maar een paar millimeter groot – liggen uitgestrooid over een donkere matte matrix, en het licht doet twee dingen tegelijk: dunne randen gloeien oranjerood als glas met tegenlicht, terwijl vlakke basisvlakken onder de lamp wit opflakkeren. De dichtste kleur volgt de rechterrand, waar de kristallen tot een aaneengesloten korst samendringen.
Vanadiniet, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, hoort thuis in de oxidatiezone: het ontstaat waar neerzijgend water primair looderts onder droge omstandigheden omwerkt, en juist daarom levert Marokko zoveel van het beste materiaal. Vanadium zorgt voor de kleur, lood voor het verrassende gewicht in de hand. Met hardheid 3 en een brosse aard vraagt het om een zachte kwast en niets schurends – de kristalranden schilferen lang voordat de matrix het begeeft.
De plaat meet 6,9 × 1,5 × 5,3 cm en weegt 75 g, dun genoeg om plat in een lade te liggen of rechtop in een vitrine te leunen. Voor deze foto's is geen standaard gebruikt; ze tonen dit exemplaar precies zoals het is.
