Trede, verspringing, trede: transparante fluorietkubussen klimmen hoek over hoek door deze groep uit Peking, strogeel aan de randen en dieper honingkleurig waar er twee of drie over elkaar liggen. Elk vlak is helder genoeg om het licht te spiegelen en tegelijk doorzichtig genoeg om de kubus erachter te tonen. Langs verschillende inwendige groeivlakken zitten vage minerale slierten en roestige vliezen ingesloten, en de hele groep rust op een ruwe ijzerbruine matrix bezet met kleinere kristallen van hetzelfde goud.
Glashelder is hier niets: in de kern van meerdere kubussen zitten bleke groeiwolken en een aantal ribben is getrapt of beschadigd waar kristallen in elkaar zijn gegroeid. Fluoriet is CaF2, kubisch, hardheid 4 op de schaal van Mohs, en door de perfecte octaëdrische splijting neemt een stoot tegen een hoek een schone driehoekige schilfer mee in plaats van een grillige beschadiging. De ene fluoriet fluoresceert onder uv, de andere niet; bij dit stuk is het de moeite waard om dat te testen in plaats van aan te nemen.
In totaal 5,8 × 5,6 × 3,5 cm bij 109 g, met een vlakke onderkant van matrix die zonder hulp op een plank blijft staan. Gefotografeerd zoals het is: de groep die u ziet, is de groep die u ontvangt.
