Chivor, in the eastern emerald belt of Colombia, is one of the country's two great emerald districts, producing fine emerald in black shale and calcite veins.
Colombian emerald
Colombia is a major source of fine emerald, and Chivor — high in the eastern Andes — is one of its historic mining centres. The emerald grew in veins cutting black, carbon-rich shale.
Signature minerals
Chivor is known for gem emerald (the green, chromium-bearing variety of beryl), often with pyrite, calcite and albite. Sharp emerald crystals on matrix are the prize.
