蜜黄色的方解石晶头骑在一根覆满无色小晶体的细柱上：名副其实的权杖，冠部远比承载它的柱身宽阔。 晶头是一颗被十来个晶面切割的单晶，有些晶面亮如镜面，有些则呈缎面，光线穿透而出时，是淡茶的颜色。 浅色晶簇与黄色相接之处转折突兀，仿佛两种矿物轮流上场。
权杖状生长发生在晶体停止生长、环境条件转变、新一代晶体在旧的晶尖上成核并向外膨大而非向上延伸之时。 这在方解石中并不常见，而且总是略带险象——接合处就是弱点，加上摩氏硬度 3 与菱面体解理，这件标本值得温柔对待。 湖北大冶正是这种温暖铁染黄色的产地。
高 5.1 cm，底面 3.0 × 2.5 cm，重 40 g，以黏土胶固定于透明压克力方块上，让晶头保持直立。 这就是商品照片中的那一颗晶体，连同展示座。
