核心是砖红色，在内部尘状包裹最浓之处转为巧克力色，而这枚主晶体在每一道斜切的棱边上都变薄为半透明的淡粉色。 它宽阔的顶面光亮如玻璃，带着浅浅的阶梯，底部则密生一团较小的晶体，那是标本自晶洞剥离的位置。 红色藏在方解石内部而非表面——那是晶体生长时卷入的氧化铁。
生长中的方解石会吸纳周围流体中悬浮的一切，因此一枚晶体可以通体不透明，而最后生成的棱边却干净清澈——这正是眼前所见的样式，尘状包裹向每一道斜棱逐渐淡出。 它莫氏硬度 3，具三个方向的完全菱面体解理，软到同一层架上几乎任何邻居都能刮伤它，所以请留给它足够的空间。
