两颗厚实的金属晶体撑起这件标本，上下相叠。 上方那颗呈钢银色，泛着黄铜调，表面皱褶如经蚀刻；下方那颗是温暖的古铜褐，宽阔的晶面抛光如镜，并刻着细密的生长条纹。 两者都坐落在乳白色的糖粒状晶簇壳上，晶壳向一侧铺成低缓的丘状，底部有一颗无色石英晶体闪着光。
黄铜矿是铜铁硫化物，CuFeS2，莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4——新鲜断口呈黄铜色，但暴露在外的晶面很快便氧化成此处所见的古铜、白镴与枪铁色调。 这层氧化膜只在表面，最好别去动它：把它刷回明亮的金属光，会剥掉收藏者所看重的包浆，过程中还可能蚀伤晶面。
