墨黑般深蓝的萤石晶体散落在一块白垩色的板状母岩上，最大的一颗是靠近中央的圆润珠粒，其下另有两颗，较小的则散向上缘。 颜色浓到正面看去几乎是黑的；把标本倾斜，光线便找到晶体薄薄的外缘，真正的紫蓝色由此透出。 细小的淡丁香紫立方体半埋在周围的石英之中。
这种近乎不透明的蓝，并不是一般意义上的杂质。 在萤石中它来自色心——CaF2 晶格中氟的排列受到扰动、被捕获的电子吸收光线的位置。 晶体变薄之处，效应也随之变弱，这正是棱边看起来比晶体主体更明亮的原因。 白色的底盘是一层细致的石英壳，颗粒状而黯淡，反而让深色的珠粒显得更硬。
