望进这颗萤石的正面，会有一个幽灵回望：一枚淡色、雾面的幻影悬在深紫之中，边缘柔和，那是更早的晶体表面被后来的生长封住的痕迹。 主晶是一颗以晶角朝上摆放的单一立方体，外部玻璃质，幻影的正中心则呈混浊的灰色。 较小的淡紫色萤石晶体攀附在上方的晶角上，一条边缘还有带绿色调的云母片与针头大小的黄铁矿。
幻影形成于生长暂停之时。 一层薄薄的杂质沉降在晶体表面，之后的萤石绕着它继续生长，旧的晶面便被封存在内部，成为看得见的界线。 湖南瑶岗仙正是这样一个产地：紫色萤石经常在藏家尺寸上把这份纪录保留得清晰可读。 萤石成分为 CaF2，摩氏硬度 4，具完全的八面体解理——用力压在一个晶角上，它就会沿着你看不见的一个面裂开。
