细针结成的放射晶簇从这片贵州标本的一端铺到另一端，每一丛都是紧密放射的一小球，中心泛白，整片望去是柔和的卡其褐色，不细看几乎像青苔。 骑在上头的，是这种材料因之得名的爆米花形态：浑圆的乳白色团粒，其中几颗边缘镶着淡奶油黄色的染痕，还有一颗裂开成环，露出中空的核心。
石膏是 CaSO4·2H2O，摩氏硬度 2，软到用指甲便能划出痕迹。 正因为软，这类针状晶簇才格外容易受损，也正因如此，这件标本最好放在不会被任何东西擦碰到针尖的位置。 请干燥保存，切勿冲洗——石膏在水中微溶。
