白垩般的瓣状突起在这件小巧石膏的表面层层交叠，每一瓣都布满细密的同心皱纹，凹陷处撒着锈橙色的氧化铁。 外形是一朵扁平的玫瑰花结，约莫核桃大小；多数石膏呈玻璃光泽，它却哑光而不透明：整件标本上找不到一个晶面，只有一层层堆积起来的增生。
石膏的成分是 CaSO4·2H2O，硬度仅莫氏 2——指甲就能刮伤它，湿布更糟，因为石膏微溶于水，一经水洗便会失去光泽。 这种爆米花状晶习来自矿物质水薄膜的缓慢堆积，而非在开放空腔中自由生长，这正是它的表面由一层层圆壳而非平面构成的原因。
