蜜色沿着这颗大冶方解石的上缘流动，往下便渐渐淡入烟灰。 晶体本身是一颗完整的块状菱面体，透明到能看见指尖隔着它投下的影子；宽阔的上晶面上，细密的生长纹交错成网。 正面有一道边缘显得格外明亮通透——那是一条狭窄的天然斜面，横贯晶体全宽，并非任何切磨加工的结果。
湖北的大冶矿区是铁与铜的产地，当地的方解石常常就是这个样子：温暖的铁染色调覆在透明晶体上，几何形态锐利，表面则以条纹保存着自身的生长记录。 就化学而言它是 CaCO3，属三方晶系，硬度莫氏 3。 菱面体解理正好与那些明亮的边缘平行，因此若碰撞的位置不对，掉下来的会是一整片，而不是一个小缺口。
