一枚海绿色的萤石立方体高踞在这件内蒙古板状标本的左侧，晶面玻璃光泽、棱角锐利，内部悬着一个深色的棱角形体——那是晶体早期的生长阶段，在中途被凝住，而后又被清澈的绿色覆盖过去。 它周围的母岩铺满了柠檬黄绿与橄榄色的小球，沿着下缘还有三四枚水清透明的立方体，几乎不带颜色地映着光。
这样的幻影记录了一次停顿。 晶体先是生长，接着溶液中发生了变化——另一种矿物的微尘、化学成分的转变——随后生长在被覆盖的晶面上重新开始，把旧有的轮廓永久封存在原处。 萤石（CaF2）莫氏硬度 4，并沿四个方向完全解理，因此在拥挤的陈列架上请让它远离更硬的标本。
