这件内蒙古标本上的立方体，紫色浓郁得早已越过丝绒的层次，看去近乎黑色；一旦光线从背后透入，棱边便亮起紫罗兰色，内部也一阶接一阶交出方正的幻影生长轮廓。 晶体四周与下方堆着一层淡橄榄黄色的球状结壳，表面哑光、呈葡萄状，把深色的萤石衬得更加突出。
幻影的形成，是生长暂停得够久，让另一种矿物的薄膜、或仅仅是流体性质的改变沉积在晶面上，之后生长才重新开始；较早、较小的立方体轮廓，就这样被封存在较大的晶体之内。 这种近乎黑色的浓度来自 CaF2 晶格中的色心。 萤石莫氏硬度 4，具完全的八面体解理，请托住母岩取拿，不要捏住棱角。
