这里全靠一颗晶体撑场：一颗淡玫瑰色的方解石，颜色如同贝壳内侧，没有母岩，也没有伴生矿物来分散注意力。 它的形态相当复杂——十来个晶面以平缓的角度交会，有些明亮如镜，有些则被内部生长面遮成薄纱，在石体深处化为细密的平行纹理。
方解石（CaCO3）属三方晶系，硬度仅莫氏 3，并具三个方向的完全菱面体解理——磕到棱边会削下一片，而不是缺一个角。 湖北多年来持续产出粉红色方解石；这抹色调来自晶格中微量的锰，而锰也正是许多方解石会对紫外光产生反应的原因，只是强弱因晶体而异。 在它后方放一条直边，看到的双重影像便泄漏了方解石著名的强双折射。
3.8 × 2.5 × 2.5 cm、45 g，以灰白色黏土固定在此处所见的透明压克力座上。 所有影像都只拍摄了这颗晶体。
