望进前方晶面，晶体便展开成一道阶梯：灰紫色的层次逐级后退地叠起，幻影之后又是幻影，每一层都曾是蒙上尘屑、随后被下一层生长掩埋的晶面。 外壳保持着淡淡的冰蓝，在左侧的立方体上几乎白得像霜。 奶油色的方解石板状晶体沿顶缘与右缘立成层叠的扇形，接缝处还坐着几点深色的金属光泽细粒。
幻影的形成，是生长暂停、一层外来物质落在晶面上，之后萤石又在其上继续生长；被埋住的轮廓便以早期晶体的幽影留存下来。 这里的过程重复了许多次，因此内部读来像阶梯，而非单一的内含立方体。 萤石是 CaF2，莫氏硬度 4，八面体解理完全，并可能对紫外光有所反应——不过反应的强弱因晶体而异。
