一枚蓝铜矿太阳花几乎覆盖这片薄板的整个表面：圆盘中心的群青深得近乎墨色，光线掠过之处则转为矢车菊蓝。 表面是绒质而非玻璃质的——无数微小晶片竖立而生，宛如地毯的绒毛。 两三处淡色的黏土母岩自蓝色中透出，为圆盘勾出海岸线般的边界。
这类太阳花形成于蓝铜矿在软质黏土岩层之间结晶之处：向上生长已无空间可用，放射状的晶片便横向铺展成扁平的圆盘。 蓝铜矿是一种铜的碳酸盐，Cu3(CO32(OH)2，莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4，而淡色母岩更为柔软。 Malbunka 太阳花切勿水洗，也切勿刷拭蓝色部位；吹一口气就是全部的清洁工序，并且应避免阳光直射。
薄板尺寸 2.8 × 2.8 cm、厚 1.3 cm，重仅 10 g，以白色黏着胶泥固定在透明压克力座上。 每一张照片拍摄的都是这枚太阳花本身，固定方式亦如图所示。
